Scavenger Hunt
How many can your family find this weekend? Tap each one as you spot it. Leave nature where you found it: look, take a picture, then leave it for the next scout.
Trees: oak, pecan and cedar all grow in the park. Can’t find one of them? Any 3 different kinds of trees count. Compare their leaves and bark!
Rules for watching wild animals
- 1Keep your distance. Stay at least 25 yards away (about 2 school buses). Hold your thumb out at arm’s length: if it doesn’t cover the whole animal, you’re too close.
- 2Never feed, touch or chase. Human food makes wild animals sick, and a cornered animal may bite or scratch.
- 3Be quiet and still. Use soft voices and slow moves. You’ll see more that way!
- 4If it changes what it’s doing because of you, back away. That means you’re too close.
- 5Stay with your adult and take only pictures, leave only footprints.
- !Snakes, skunks, or anything acting strange or friendly: walk away and tell an adult right away.
Water safety rules at the lake
- 1Only go to the lake with an adult. Never by yourself, and always with a buddy too.
- 2Look from the shore. No swimming or wading. The lake bottom can drop off suddenly and the water is cold this time of year.
- 3Stay back from the edge. Muddy banks and wet rocks are slippery. Walk, don’t run.
- 4Keep your adult in arm’s reach of little ones anywhere near the water.
- !If someone falls in: Reach, Throw, Don’t Go. Yell for an adult, reach with a long stick or throw something that floats. Never jump in after them.
